Top Medigap Plans
In most states, there are 10 different Medigap plans that you can choose from. Having so many choices might seem like a good thing overall, but it does make it a little harder to make a decision. These are the top Medigap plans; you may want to check them out first when purchasing your Medigap plan. We think you might find that one of these Medicare Supplement insurance options is the right choice for you.
1. Medigap Plan G
Medigap Plan G is a highly popular plan because it is so rich in benefits. It offers all of the perks listed above except for one. Medigap Plan G, like most of the top Medigap plans, it does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible. Other than that, it is the same as Medigap Plan F, so it offers some of the best benefits. For example, it covers the Medicare Part A deductible, Medicare Part A coinsurance, some foreign travel costs and more. When you compare Medicare Supplement plan rates, you’ll see that these Medicare Supplement plan rates are some of the best in exchange for the coverage that you get.
In the past, Medigap Plan G has only been available as a standard plan. In 2020, though, it will also be available as a high deductible plan. This may be the best way to supplement your Medicare benefits if you’d like low monthly premiums and rich coverage that you can enjoy all throughout the calendar year. If you talk to one of our agents, you can learn more about why you should sign up for this plan during your Open Enrollment Period.
2. Medigap Plan N
Medicare Supplement Plan N is our second favorite Medicare Supplement plan on the top Medigap list for 2023. It is a particularly good choice for those who are looking for affordable Medicare Supplement plan rates. It does not cover the Medicare Part B deductible or Part B excess charges. There is some cost-sharing, so you will have to pay a small co-payment when you go to the doctor or emergency room. The Medigap plan rates for this plan are typically quite affordable, though, and coverage is still more comprehensive than for simpler plans like Medigap Plan A or Plan K.
These things are not covered by your Medicare Part A and Part B coverage or your Medicare Supplement plan rates if you choose one of the Plan N insurance plans:
- Part B deductible
- Part B excess charges
3. Medigap Plan F
Historically our top pick on the top Medigap plans list, Medicare Supplement insurance Plan F has been the most popular plan. You can actually choose from a standard option or high deductible Plan F, both of which are very popular among policyholders. Medicare Supplement Plan F is the most comprehensive of the Medicare Supplement plans. There is no comparison when it comes to benefits on top of what you can enjoy from Medicare Part A and Part B.
Like many plans, Medicare Supplement insurance Plan F covers the Medicare Part A deductible, Medicare Part A coinsurance, Medicare Part B excess charges, Medicare Part B coinsurance and more. The Medicare Part B premium is not covered, and a Medicare Part D drug plan is not included. You will have to pay for these things separately with Medicare Supplement insurance Plan F or any other Medigap insurance policy.
Unfortunately, private insurance companies will no longer be allowed to offer these Medicare Supplement insurance plans to new beneficiaries of Original Medicare. Beneficiaries who want a Medicare Supplement plan that offers top benefits will need to look into Medicare Plan G from one of the best Medicare Supplement insurance companies in 2020 instead. Medicare Supplement Plan G is slated to become the most popular plan when Medicare Supplement Plan F is no longer available for new enrollees.
4. Medigap Plan C
#4 on the top Medigap Plan list, is plan C, another popular, comprehensive Supplement policy option that helps greatly reduce out of pocket costs for nursing facility care, doctor’s office visits for preventive care or health conditions, hospital stays and more. It covers everything listed above, except for the Part B excess charges. This is another Medicare Supplement plan with slightly higher monthly premiums, but many find that the coverage is worth it.
Like Medigap Plan F, though, this plan is going away for people who are newly eligible for Medicare in 2020. Again, for comprehensive coverage that is similar to Medicare Supplement Plan C but that has more affordable monthly premiums, check out Medigap Plan rates for Medigap Plan G during your Medicare Enrollment Period.
If you purchase this health insurance option from an insurance agency, this will not be covered:
- Medicare Part B excess charges
5. Medigap Plan D
Medicare Supplement Plan D is a Medigap plan that should not be confused with Medicare Part D, which is a type of prescription drug coverage. This is one option to consider from the top Medigap plan list for supplementing your Medicare coverage that you might not have heard about. After all, Medicare Supplement Plan D is not as popular as the other Medigap options that you might have read about above.
Medicare Supplement plan rates for this plan are often more affordable than with other Medigap policy options. If you’re looking for Medicare Supplement insurance plans with lower monthly premiums but sufficient coverage and limited plan limits, it’s worth your consideration.
Be aware that this Medigap option does not cover the following things:
- Medicare Part B deductible
- Medicare Part B excess charges
